Vibrant Vernacular.

New Orleans is a very funky city, with a broad range of people who have a ton of character.  Like most regions of the US, there is a very distinct dialect - one that can be a bit hard to understand at times.  Since it's taken me a little while to get used to the local lingo, I figured I'd throw in some words and phrases that are very unusual and unlikely to be heard anywhere else in our fair country.  And just because I'm super-geeky and love to do stuff like this, I'm going to throw in some little-known facts about our fine city.  Read on, Jeeves!!

^^  Our neighborhood Catholic Church
I know I didn't HAVE to put a picture in this post...  I just like to break up the monotony.  ;0))

Vocabulary.  Oh, and pronunciation.  Very important - as a local will be able to make you as a tourist as soon as you ask a question.  So... (and in no particular order):

Burgundy Street  (local lingo:  burr-GOON-dee) - located in the French Quarter.

Chartres Street  (local lingo:  charters - not pronounced anything like the French) - located in the French Quarter.

New Orleans  (local lingo:  gnaw-leenz) - this one was difficult for me to get used to - as the city of Orleans in France pronounce it Orr-LAY-ohn (with the last syllable a little dragged out in a nasal-y way) - which is a far cry from how locals say it here.  ;0))

Marigny  (local lingo:  mare-en-hee) - very funky neighborhood on the Eastbank.  Lots of artists and musicians tend to live there.

Po'Boy  (local lingo:  poh-boy) - what is also know in other areas of the country as a submarine sandwich, hoagie, grinder... you get the picture.  If you order a Po'Boy the person taking your order will ask if you want it fully dressed.  If you answer "yes", your sandwich will come with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and mayo.

Muffuletta  (local lingo:  muff-ahh-leh-tah) - a traditional New Orleans sandwich.  It's very large and typically four people can eat off of one (they cut the round bread into fourths) or you can buy them by the quarters.

Tasso  (local lingo:  tahh-soh) - a spicy smoked ham found in many dishes here.  It's delicious!!

Boudin  (local lingo:  boo-dween) - a spicy sausage made from unusual meats...  here you can find alligator, crawfish, and pork boudin.

**********

If you're going to get groceries, you're making groceries.  As in "I'm out of almost everything here...  tomorrow I'll be making groceries at the Casey Jones."

Those grassy strips that are sometimes seen between the left and right side of the road (in all the other states they are referred to as medians) are called neutral ground here.  This dates back to the days when the French and Spanish occupied Louisiana and the small area between the French and Spanish boundaries was referred to as such.  For some strange reason, the term has made it down through the generations and is still used today.

In the Garden District and Uptown areas of the city, there are wild parrots which actually live in the large live oaks and in the palm trees.  They are easy to spot and it's pretty cool to be able to look up and see one.  There are a LOT of different colored ones, too.  :0))

Speaking of birds, there are wild roosters and chickens that live in some parks, public areas, and medians (aka the neutral ground).  They are oddly territorial.  We also have a lot of pigeons, ducks, and geese.  Alas, flamingos are only found at the Zoo.

Most (if not all) convenience stores, supermarkets, and discount stores will not just have wine and beer available, they'll also have a selection of liquors and mixers available.  You can purchase alcohol at any time of the day or night.  There are no blue laws here.

On that note, you can also have your alcoholic drinks to go.  Yes, you did read that correctly!!  There are even drive-through daiquiri stands so that you don't even get out of your car.  They do come sealed - drinking and driving laws are most certainly enforced, but you can be lazy and stay in your car to order.

Glass bottles are prohibited on the streets - so if you get your boozy drink to go while you're walking around, you'll have it in a plastic cup.  Beer cans are not prohibited, either.

**********

Sometime over the next couple of days, I'll be writing about the Aquarium of the Americas and over the weekend, I'll be posting some Insectarium adventures.  Stay tuned - same bat time (okay, so maybe not really - ha!) but definitely the same bat channel.  Cheers!!

And they all asked for you... at the Audubon Zoo!

"The monkeys asked, the tigers asked, they all inquired about you..."

I seriously didn't think that I'd have this long of a hiatus (believe it or not, I actually thought that I'd have some time to blog while having company - but no.  I didn't.  I'm owning it, though).  So, over the next week, I'll be chasing my own tail and making an attempt to catch up.

So...  B. and I headed out to the Audubon Zoo on Thursday.  I wanted to go on a weekday - and go early - so that we could really enjoy our visit.  Chicken Little had reported that the sky was falling, but as far as I was concerned, it was just overcast and we decided to go anyhow.  I mean, isn't that what umbrellas are for???

Best.  Decision.  Ever.

We had the entire place to ourselves.  It didn't rain.  It didn't sprinkle.  The sky didn't fall.  Only a few tourists (and some with those huge fucking baby strollers - I simply do NOT understand why some people feel the need to have a baby buggy the size of damned Smart Car, but I digress) - some with children - some couples, and a handful of locals.  There were entire areas where there were no people at all, and since it was so quiet, most of the animals were out and about.  For those of you who do decide to visit our electric city, my suggestion is that you try and plan your big* attraction visits during the week (if your schedule permits it).  The weekends are totally cray-cray!!

Some shots from our visit:

^^  Entering the Zoo

^^  Flamingos are the first to greet visitors!!

^^  It's Gene the Elephant (left) and his Lady friend...

^^  Another shot of Gene...  he salutes when his keeper asks him to!!

^^  Heading over to see the gorillas, chimps, and orangutans... just to name a few...

^^  One of the bigger giraffes...

^^  Mama giraffe and her little one...

^^  Aaarrggghhhhhh...  gator got my foot!!  (Total cheese shot)

We also decided to have lunch while we were there, and considering how expensive food can be at some of these attractions, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the prices were pretty decent.  We ate at the Zoofari Cafe, where I had a very fresh, well-prepared, good-sized "side" salad ($5.00), a grilled Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich ($5.00), and a refillable drink ($2.00) for lunch.  Please note that the Cafe is the only "restaurant" on-site with healthier foods.  The other eateries had more of your typical kid food - nachos, pizza, chicken nuggets, and ice cream (there is one stand where you can get only Haagen-Daz ice cream and treats - we avoided that one).  Soft drink/Gatorade machines are also placed all over the park, but it's my suggestion that you bring your own water/drinks with you - as it was $3.00 for ONE 20-ounce drink.  There are also water fountains, so you can refill your water bottles while touring the zoo.

All-in-all, we spent about 5 hours there, had lunch, and saw all the attractions.  We got in right at 11:00 AM and left right as the zoo was closing (at 4:00 PM - so plan accordingly!!).  There is plenty of free parking - and if you're game AFTER your zoo excursion, you can leave your car in the parking lot and catch the bus (less than $1.00 per person) to tour the boutiques on Magazine Street.

It was a great visit and I'd recommend this zoo to anyone who enjoys a real hands-on, close-encounter animal experience.

*Big attractions - to include the Zoo, Aquarium of the Americas, Insectarium, New Orleans Museum of Art, Swamp Tours, Plantation Tours, Voodoo Tours, Haunted New Orleans Tours, and Swamp Tours (just to name a few).  You are more than welcome to send questions to:  thepoint(dot)nola(at)googlemail(dot)com.

A Small Hiatus.

Since one of my most favorite friends is coming to visit (she arrives on Tuesday night @ 8:00 PM), I probably won't be blogging again until Wednesday or Thursday.  Husby has the day off tomorrow, as it's a Federal Holiday, so we'll be heading across the river to the French Quarter.  We're going to be picking up a new piece of art (we have 110+ pieces and counting) from our favorite artist and after that??  Who knows??  ;0))

Tuesday is going to be balls-to-the-walls hectic for me, as I'll be forced to have to clean (GAH!!  I absolutely LOATHE cleaning) and I'm sure that there will be something I missed OR forgot, so last-minute errands will also be necessary.  I'm just going to shut the iMac OFF entirely, so I don't procrastinate and fuck around all day (hahaha - yeah, right).

Anyhow, let me get to the point (long-winded I am - so thank you for sticking with me)...  I have a loose schedule of things to do while B. is visiting and I'll be blogging on each place and posting a ton of pictures.  And the list is:
That is our cray-cray list of things to do so far.  It's going to be a super-keen-awesome-happy visit!!

So, keep your peepers peeled for my pictures, updates, and snide comments!!!

Joyeux Anniversaire...

Our Choggie turns ten today!!!  As a special treat, she'll be getting 10 mini-meatballs (dog-friendly, of course) and I'll be taking her on an extra-long walk today.  She loves to prance around the neighborhood (we refer to it as bog-trotting, actually) and since it is trash day, she'll get all the exciting sniffs of bin trash!!  ;0))

^^ Our beloved Chai-Dog ("Choggie")

I'm trying to find some pictures of when she was little, but I think they're still on my wickedly old Dell laptop (2003 model Inspiron - and believe me, that fucker has run (slowly) for over ten years now) and I'm too lazy right now to even try and FIND where my old computer is at (probably in the husby's "man-cave" with his record player and old-ass stereo and his two VCRs) - so finding it without him here would be a feat in and of itself.

For those of you wondering what breed Chai-Dog is, she is an AKC registered Chesapeake Bay Retriever.  Of course, she's spoiled to the nth degree, so the only thing she actually "retrieves" would be treats, bones, food, toys, hugs, belly-rubs, and pets.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHOGGIE!!

Happy VD!!

We really don't do the Valentine's Day thingie here.  Usually, husby will pick me up something "cheeze-tastic" (heart-shaped box o' chocolates with a funny little stuffed toy) and a card.  And we don't typically go out (we don't want to fight the crowds) and we're just not romantically wired.  Our first VD together consisted of steak, shrimp, and lots of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill (at his apartment).  Ooh-la-la!!  And husby picked the meal and cooked it.  This feast was presented on a card table that would shake like crazy every single time either one of us sawed off a piece of steak.

But it was magical.  And we laughed and got silly and listened to our favorite music and had great sex.

Okay.  So the sex thing was probably TMI.  Apologies.

And did I mention that I'm severely allergic to most flowers??  So the husby gets a pass on those, too.  :0))

I hope that all of you have a very fantastic VD - whether it's a hot night on the town, dinner at a fancy restaurant, pizza, wings and a movie, or eating Chinese delivery naked in bed...  make it YOURS.  And be sure to enjoy.

Crawdaddy Craze!!

Apologies for the late post on THE crawfish boil - but it was late when I got in last night (Sunday) and I figured it would take me for-fucking-ever to get all my pictures up... and I seriously couldn't trust my spelling and grammar last night (a big-thank-you goes to (drum roll, please) a honkin' big box o' Franzia's finest "Sunset Blush" - a mere $10.99 at the Casey Jones - SCORE!!).  I also picked up some hamburger buns and a fresh loaf of Big Bunny wheat for the husby while I was there.  Oh, and a 7-pound bag of ice for S. and L., whose built-in ice-maker was very overworked with all the guests there.

So...  we'll start out with the bag of live crawfish...

^^  Oh, yes indeedy.  There are about 50 pounds of LIVE mudbugs just waiting to be decimated...

^^  And the pot cranked up to 180,000 BTUs - sounded like a Bambi forest fire!!!

^^  And our neighbor's friend - overlooking the pot/cooking...  dressed for Mardi Gras with a purple fuzzy fedora, green shirt, and gold pants.  He had only regular shoes on...  I think something with a lot super-shiny gold on his feet would've been spectacular.  :0))

^^  And the dump on to the newspapers!!  Crawfish, corn, sausage, quartered onions, tons of spices and mushrooms (which were some of my favorite things from the pot!!)
**Disclaimer:  I do not know who is drinking the Mountain Dew - but it's a sacrilege.

^^  Digging in!!

^^  So very delish.

So, now all you uppity-folks have seen for yourself just how a crawfish boil is done here in New Orleans (specifically - in the Point).  It was FANTASTIC.  I only wish that some of you could've been here to taste it...  made my lips tingle - spiced perfectly!!

x0x0

Also, don't get too excited at how many posts I'm cranking out - there's just been a lot going on and I've wanted to be able to share it all with you.  Besides, Suri might blow up if I don't take some of these roasty-toasty pictures off her!!

Mardi Gras Parade!!! And Random Commentary!!! (Part I)

Our Westbank (also known as the "Bestbank" to some) had our Krewe of Nomtoc Mardi Gras Parade today.  The husby and I decided to hoof it over, since it was so close to our house (only about 8 blocks away - not bad really!!).  The only thing I regret is NOT bringing my cheery-green-folding chair.  The crowd was pretty mild (even for 11:00 in the morning!!) and the New Orleans Police Department (the few patrolling the corner we were on) were as cool as cucumbers.

Please note:  Most, if not all, of the Mardi Gras parades during the day are considered to be family-friendly events and really fucked-up drunks and lewd, nude behavior is NOT appropriate at all.  You will end up in the hooscow or in an NOPD paddy-wagon.  Ladies, if you want to get the beads the old-fashioned way (by flashing your bare breasts), you're going to have to go across the river and hit up a night-time parade in the French Quarter.

That being said, here are some pictures and highlights of our Krewe of Nomtoc parade today:

^^  The Shriners were some of the first through.  They had a ton of these street rods!!

^^  Had to take a picture of this...  it says "Jugs Social Club" - hehehe!!
(*Most of my friends will get the reference, but if you'd like to know, leave me a message.)

^^  The King of the Krewe of Nomtoc.
(Every float was pulled by a red tractor.  It was very interesting.)

^^  The King's Float (side view)

^^  The Back of the King's Float - it was very well done.  :0))

~ INTERMISSION ~
For a bathroom break, duh!!

^^ Bathroom Break!!  On the back of trailer, no less.
I don't know how comfortable I'd feel using a porta-john on the trailer of a truck!!

^^  And I actually felt bed for this NOLA PD officer...  he had to follow the truck loaded with the sans-a-john and stop the parade whenever a participant needed to use the bathroom.
Pun intended:  but that was a SHIT assignment, considering it was 74* and humid today.  I hope he was being paid overtime for that!!

~ Intermission Over ~
Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming (of sorts - if you could call it that)

^^  The Queen of the Krewe of Nantoc's tractor...

^^  And her personalized Float.  She looked very proper and lovely.  :0))

^^  And a look down to street to see what's coming...
The parade was at a bit of a pause, which is why you see the dancers sitting down.
You ca also see part of the Central Business District (CBD) and the French Quarter in the background.

^^  And "Hello Kitty" and her entourage has arrived.
All the little girls wanted to go and hug her.  It was pretty funny.
At least you can't tell if you're making eye contact when the other person is wearing a mask...

^^ Disney's Mickey Mouse and PBS's Zoe (correct me if I'm worong) were flying the Muppet Banner.
Poor Big Bird (not that I'ma fan) - his head was on so crooked, I wondered how he could see.
And then, I figured he might be bombed out of his mind wearing a Camelback filled with booze UNDERNEATH the heavy-feather suit.  Good play, Big Bird Impersonator.  Good play!!

^^  Okay, Big Bird is *really lagging along**
And you can't tell by the picture, but he's weaving all over.  Hence why he has his own "space" between characters.  It also looks like The Bird is being worn like a woman in his high heels.
CROSS DRESSER!!  :0))

^^  Elmo had his own space - and po-po services because little kids kept trying to run and hug him.
I don't give a shit what anyone says - those furry outfits have got to be HOT AS HELL even though the weather is mild.  And I do (wickedly wonder) just how clean IS that get-up???

^^  And a parade just wouldn't be a parade without SpongeBob SquarePants!!

And as it seems, Blogger will NOT let me enter any more pictures.  So, I'll be posting extras on an additional post, below this one.

More to come, for sure!!  :0))

Mardi Gras Parade!! And Random Commentary!!! (Part II)

To continue on with the Krewe of Nomtoc Parade (and because my first blog is so picture and link heavy), I'm adding additional pictures and comments on a brandy-new post.  :0))

So...  here are the additional pictures:

^^  Last year's Royal Nomtoc Couple....

^^  On their funky-old-style NOLA float.

^^  I thought this was a sea monster - apparently it's not.
It's a Griffin.
They were giving out stuffed toys.  Husby snagged two and gave them to the little kids next to us.
We are SUCH child-haters!!!  ;0))

^^  This iPhone 4S picture does NOT do this float justice!!  It was gorgeous.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it was one of my favorites...

^^  Old Fire Truck presented by the Harvey Fire Department.

^^  One of THE brightest floats...  they were handing out stuffed animals...
To include cats and big, fuzzy snakes.  The happiness is evident in all the spring colors.  :0))

^^  Up close and personal!!!

^^  American Eagle float - ahh-maze-ingly done.  It was a beautiful piece of work.

^^  From up close...

^^  Beautiful Horse Brigade...

^^  She was the leading horse...  I've never one dressed in Hawt Pink.
And I don't understand why they didn't use blinders.  So many people tried to touch them.

Enough for my parade experiences today...  tomorrow is the crawfish boil and I can't fucking wait!!!  This has been a great experience, and I hope that many of my friends can join me next year for this!!!

Suck the Head. Pinch the Tail.

Let's talk...  crawfish!!

What did you think this post was going to be about, you dirty pervs???  Something sexy??  Not that a lot of kinky shit doesn't go down in this city, but this post is about food.  So there.

We have entered into crawfish (crayfish or crawdads or crawdaddies or mudbugs - as some others may refer to them) season.  Which means that the boiling parties have begun.  As a matter-of-fact, our neighbors are having their first boil this Sunday (February 10th) and we've been invited to participate in this very New Orleans tradition.  I'm so stupidly excited about this!!  My first REAL boil (outside of an actual restaurant).

So...  what does happen at one of these festivities???

The crawfish are boiled outside (in what looks like a big turkey fryer) - using a propane burner.  Much like a Southern BBQ, the men-folk stand around the pot, drinking beer, telling tall tales, and just bullshitting each other (in general).  Of course, the crawfish are not the only things that go into said pot.  Added to the mix are a ton of spices (Zatarain's is preferred), spicy andouille sausage is another ingredient, along with potatoes and corn-on-the-cob.  Chunked-up yellow onions and bell peppers may or may not be added (I've yet to see a Boiled Plate where there were peppers in the mix) - and then it all cooks together and tastes ahh-may-zing!!!  It's like the Southern version of a New England Clam Bake - well, minus the seaweed (and the beach - but I can see the levee and the Mississippi River from my house, so it's close enough for Government work, eh?)...

After everything is cooked, tables are set up outside and lined heavily with newspaper.  Most of the cooking water is drained, and the entire contents of the pot are spread all over the tables.  Then??  It's a free-for-all.  You grab your crawfish, sausage, potatoes, and corn and go.  to.  town.  The claws on a crawfish are too small to get any meat, so in order to eat these lovelies, you would pinch the tail, twist it off, take the shell off, eat the meat, and then suck the head (which has a lot of fat and a lot of flavor - so I've been told - I just can't seem to bring myself to do it).  And on to the next... and the next... and the next.  The usual configuration of the crawfish-to-human-ratio happens to be about three pounds of mudbugs to each person.  S. is planning on having about 15 of us over, so we'll have about 50 pounds of crawfish in the pot.

I've volunteered to be the sous chef and help with everything - nothing like getting some hands-on experience.  :0))

^^  This is the apron I plan on wearing so I don't mess up my tee-shirt...

^^  Here is a finished crawfish boil platter... husby had these at Savoie's in Shreveport, LA

^^  And the infamous Zatarain's boil spices...  you can order online and do your own boil!!

And I plan on having a bunch of very cold beer with my huge-ass plate of crawdaddies!!

The Disappearing Cock. Countdown to a Visit.

Our friendly neighborhood rooster was removed today.  Not in a bad way (as in someone blowing him out of his feathers and making a meal left over from the dead parts) - but in a good way, as the SPCA came, picked him up, and relocated him to Happy Cock Land (which happens to be MANY blocks away - with other wild fowl).  So, for the first time in over a week, we've all been Cock-A-Doodle-Do free.

Although, I must confess...  I was kind of hoping to try S.'s "Coq au Vin" as the Rooster's existence was on shaky ground (until the SPCA retrieved him) - shucky darn!!!  ;0))  I still might have to try and make this some Sunday afternoon - I'll use a fresh chicken instead of some crazy cock.

^^  It does look quite delish, does it not??  (Photo courtesy of Wikipedia)

And...  one of my oldest friends from my North Carolina days will be flying in on Tuesday, February 19th and staying with us until Sunday, February 24th.  I'm totally super-cray-cray-excited, for a couple of reasons.  One of the biggest is (mostly) because I haven't seen her since the end of 2009, right before we moved to Germany.  I can't possibly tell you how wonderful and supportive she was with helping me pack AND to get the house into shape for our new tenants (we opted to use the property for a rental instead of selling).  This is also her first trip to The Big Easy - and she'll be coming after all the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras madness is over, and the weather should be beautiful.  We've started a list of all the "to-do" stuff she wants to see during this trip.  This is what is on the agenda thus far:
We'll be walking a lot and using the Canal Street Ferry (which is free for pedestrians and only $1.00 charge per car - one way).  For anyone who is coming to visit, I would suggest taking the ferry (round-trip, during the day - simply walking) for the fantastic views and picture opportunities.  The ferry leaves every half-hour, so you can do the trip within an hour or less (depending on if you want to explore some of the architecture in Old Algiers Point).

I can't wait to show her all the really cool sights!!!

^^  The welcome sign into The Point

I will more than likely be updating this blog with plenty of pictures during our whirlwind adventure visit!!

Super Bowl??? No. Iron Chef??? Yes.

There are SO many "celebrities" here (for The Game - AKA "Super Bowl" and for "Other Reasons" - you know, like Mardi Gras) and I really felt so VERY lucky (because I'm such a Foodie and all) to be able to see Marc Forgione (an Iron Chef) at a Macy's demonstration...  well, from my perspective... fuck the Super Bowl (it's not as if The Saints are playing in it).  So, I'd much rather SEE someone of this caliber cook AND answer questions.  Chef Forgione was so personal, so nice, so witty, so honest...  it was WORTH the time it took to see his show (we claimed our FRONT ROW SEATS two hours before the demonstration).  He also signed my cookbook and I ended up scoring some pretty sweet mixing bowls (I fell in love with them before I realized that they were the hoity-toity Macy's line of Martha Stewart stuff - sorry, but I feel like she is K-Mart material and not much else).

Anyhow, let me get on with it.

Chef's food???  Brilliant.  Everything he made???  We ALL tasted.  Marc used a smaller version of MY beloved Kitchen Aid mixer to make his own sausage.  And everything was RIGHT THERE and REAL.  He also made a version of a New England Lobstah Roll that was to die for - and I learned a brand new technique for getting the tail meat cooked and easy to peel.  :0))

Take a look (some of the pics are blurry - I was using my iPhone)...

 ^^  Interviewing I

 ^^  Interviewing II

 ^^  Interviewing III

^^  Delicious de-constructed Sausage, Peppers, and Onions...  email me for the recipe...

Too bad my beloved husby detests NYC (my apologies to any New York readers).  I think it's his Southern upbringing along with some piss-poor tourists that he came across during his misbegotten youth - but (fingers crossed) I'd love to go there just to dine at very specific restaurants.  :0))

Such food LOVE.

Marc is the bomb-diggity....

Deliciousness.
